3in6 Length Retention Challenges are Back!

Originally posted on September 18.

If you are familiar with my previous 3in6 challenges, then you already know what it's about.  For 2013, I will also add motivational or informational articles in our monthly checkin to keep us all ... well motivated and focused.

If you are NEW to 3in6, I encourage you to click the "3in6 Challenge" label below to get a feel for it.

Here is the plan.  In January 2013, I will run two 3in6 Challenges.  But wait?  It's not 2013 yet.  Well, guess what?  I will run a 1in3 Challenge from October through December to get you ready for 2013!  This short version of 3in6 is ideal for those who are hesitant about protective styling or challenges, in general, BUT would love to get their feet wet and give it a try.  Or maybe you are just looking to gain that one extra inch to push you to your goal length.

So, are you in?  If so, mark your spot in the comment section.

Purpose of this challenge: To retain 1-1.5 inches of growth in 3 months.  (This is based on a growth rate of 1/3 to 1/2 of an inch per month.)

Challenge period: October 1 - January 1 2013

Guidelines:
1. Eat (non-canned) vegetables or fruits with each meal.
2. Take a daily multivitamin.
3. Drink sufficient water.
(Amt of water in oz. = Your weight in lbs * 0.5)
4. Wear twists or braids 2-4 weeks at a time.
5. No direct heat.
6. Absolutely no trimming.  (Start with a fresh cut now if need be.)
7. Optional for this go around: Workout 2-3 days a week; at least 20 minutes per workout.

*Keep in mind that some of your water intake can come from the food in your meals.

Allowances:
Each challenger is allowed two 1-week periods of styling her hair as she pleases (e.g., puff, rollerset, etc.).

Tips on wearing twists/braids long term:
- Do not twist/braid too tightly
- Redo the perimeter weekly or biweekly.
- Deep condition & detangle thoroughly prior to twisting or braiding.
- For more tips, check out posts in the twist series

  1. I'm in! I've joined all the previous 3 in 6es (though, I think I forgot to ever post my results from the last one!), so I wouldn't miss the 1 in 3 spinoff. I'm planning to try a dedicated wig routine, for the first time, where I'll have my hair cornrowed for 3-4 week stretches, and then wear wigs and headwraps during that time. I'll see how it goes for October to start, and if I don't go crazy, I'll continue in November. If I DO go crazy, it's back to by Miss Celie braids and twists! Plus, I've fallen off my workout game in recent months, and I've already planned my strategy to get back into shape, so this timing is perfect.

  6. Very helpful tips... and the most important it's that they are obvious so you don't need a doctor to tell you that... It's simply following a healthy lifestyle and everything in your body will just be OK

  7. I am very intrigued. Thinking I might give this a shot. A little nervous because I have learned that I have fine/thin hair and every time I do twists they end up looking so spaced out and scalp-y, plus I am still pretty short in length so I will have to research some cute short twist ideals, maybe some flat twisting into a bun w/ Marley hair or something and also my favorite trusty PS of crochet braids!!!
    think I am getting excited!!!

  11. Loo, love your challenges it tends to keep me a little more focus on my health and fitness. When I start your challenges I always include at least 2 days of work out. Have you thought about including a fitness regimen also on the list "to do" ?

    1. Thanks, Nessa!! You read my mind. I intended to edit the challenge to include a workout regimen, but it slipped my mind that day. I'll go do that now. Thanks for the accidental reminder! Lol. :o)

  12. Hey Loo...I'm glad I came to your page and saw you have another one in store...I've done your previous challenges and although I keeping having some minor setbacks I hope to employ some lessons learnt for this time around especially when it comes to avoiding breakage and moisturising. I just put in my second set of yarn braids and I hope to keep them in till December..was gonna do wigs but I'm trying to save money (another personal challenge of mine! lol) so my progress updates will be minimal until the end.

  14. I'm in!

I haven't done this in a while but I'm ready to get back on track. I've just put my hair into kinky twists, so the challenge for me is to make sure my hair receives enough moisture.
