Post on Heat Training?

The topic of "heat training" natural hair is a very controversial one.  I've debated whether to do a post on the possible benefits (yes, I said it ... lol) of heat training natural hair for length retention.  Let me know your thoughts in the "Comments" or "Reactions" section below. :o)

I've always equated "heat training" with "heat damage" so I'd be interested in reading on benefits of it.

I'm interested! :) I'm a no-drama type of person. i.e. Do what you wanna do with your hair! lol natural OR relaxed! I would love to hear your perspective on this.

Yup I would be interested to hear your perspective.

As someone with fine hair whose hair has really benefited from no heat, I would never do it but at the same time not everyone has fine fragile hair.

Some have less fragile and/or thick strands which would happily take heat without incurring the damage that it does to mine!

I'm with LaNeshe. To me, "heat training" = "heat damage," but I don't get all militant and heated (sorry) about the matter. So, while I am skeptical as to what benefits there could possibly be, I'd really like to hear them. Go for it, Loo!

yes! i am a fan of longhairdontcare on youtube and know she swears by this. very interested. im sure less tangling has to be one of the benefits.

Benefits? Hmmmm, I am all ears. As like socialitedreams said, I am also interested in "heat training" my hair because I am sick of not only the knots, but the constant split ends.

I'd be interested to read your spin on it. I've been asked personally about it, and my only positive view on it is this: If you are someone who wants straight hair, but do not want to expose your scalp to chemicals, then heat training or damaging your strands straight might be for you. Even though people don't like to hear the word damage it is a form of damage, it does the same thing as a relaxer but without chemicals. (The natural bonds of the hair has been broken down and will not return) I've had heat trained naturals say to me, that they don't like their hair kinky or curly, they want it straight. I initally thought, well then just relax it? But I now understand that some people's hair and scalp can not handle chemicals or they don't want to be expose to chems, and they opt to heat train. This is one positive side to it? : )

I unintentionally heat-trained my front hair when I left out some for my weave closure. I flat_ironed that section once or twice a week for four weeks. Now my hair in that area is definitely trained. It has a texlaxed look and feel to it. Will I do this to the rest of my hair? I don't think so. I'd rather texturize my 4B/Z hair for certain results than leave it up to heat to give my looser coils!

I'm very interested in reading your thoughts on the process. I don't intend to be a "straight" natural but would like to have the option to wear my hair straight maybe a few times per year. But the comments I've read from so many other naturals on the heat damage the experienced with just one straightening experience has led me to think that this might not be possible. Ronnie

I'm transitioning and I will be a semi-straight natural in the future. I will not heat train per say but I will wear my hair blow dried most of the time.
1- I hate shrinkage
2- I love the blow dried look
3- I love the manageability of stretched hair
